Step into the Asylum of Devotion at North East Indian Monasteries

North East India boasts of being a home to various monasteries. It reveals that Buddhism occupies an important place in the religious lives of the people. These sacred sites not only display the current scenario of religion in various states but also give an idea about its old traditions. Tourists can plan a monastery tour to North East India to visit the famous monasteries in the country.

Rumtek Monastery

This renowned monastery is located near Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. Originally known as the Dharma Chakra Centre, it also houses a shrine temples and another monastery of monks. The monastery took four years to complete its construction. Buddhists consider the place as highly revered site. It is situated at an elevation of 5800 ft above sea level. The monastery faces the Gangtok city.

Pemayangtse Monastery

It is the second oldest monastery of Sikkim. The place also serves as the headquarters of the Nyingmpa order of the Tibetan Buddhism. The lamasery positions itself atop a ridge high above the Rangeet River enveloped by the stunning snow-covered Himalayan peaks. The monastery got its name from ‘padma yang tse’ that literally means the ‘Sublime perfect lotus’.

Enchey Monastery

The monastery means ‘Solitary temple’. It dates back to 1909. Situated at a distance of 3 km from the city, this religious site is also built on the spot, which is believed to be blessed by Lama Druptab Karpo. The tantrik master was renowned for his flying powers. It also serves as an important seat of the Nyingma sect.


This sacred site is one of the most sacred monasteries in Sikkim. Established in 1717, the monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order. Lying around 40 km from the town Geyzing in West Sikkim, the monastery is also known as an important religious site to the Buddhists. According to ancient concept, the pilgrims are washed of all their sins once they visit the sacred Tashiding monastery. The site houses various holy Buddhist mantras, carved on stone plates. It also appears amazing with a wonderful backdrop, portrayed by mount Kanchenjunga.

Ghoom Monastery

Known as Yogachoeling Gompa, the monastery is situated in Ghoom in the hill station of Darjeeling. There is a huge image of seated ‘Maitreya Buddha’ inside. The monastery houses bells, drums and ornate thangka scrolls. It is a repository of some rare Buddhist manuscripts. Located nearby Ghoom station, the Gompa can also be reached from the Hill Cart Road.
